About Us
Founder, Sir Clive Bourne
Prostate Cancer chose a determined opponent in the late Clive Bourne, a highly successful businessman.
On contracting the disease in 1991 at the age of 49, and undergoing a course of intensive treatment that stabilised his condition, he decided to investigate every aspect and avenue of the condition available to the layman.
Positive vision
It came as a shock for him to learn that there was no organised research on either a national or international level and, impatient that such a state of affairs should exist, he set about putting the matter to rights.
Convinced that only systematic research could provide solutions, his strategy to beat the disease was to start the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation.
Step-by-step
The first step was to forge connections with the world's foremost scientists and clinicians in the field and then link them together.
After substantial conversations with his oncologist, Dr Peter Wrigley, they agreed that available medical knowledge was full of gaps and a lot of work had to be done to accelerate research.
Double-pronged attack
The Prostate Cancer Research Foundation embarked on a double-pronged attack.
First, the biennial assembly of an international forum of leading scientific and clinical researchers to discuss developments, exchange ideas and discuss best practice.
And, second, working with a panel of highly distinguished experts and lay persons, to seek and fund fresh and promising research projects .
Effective strategy
These sound business strategies have proved effective.
Today, the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation Forum is internationally recognised as the primary reference for cutting edge research.
And the Foundation itself is overwhelmed with requests for project funding.
Unique work
We're well aware that there are a number of other prostate cancer charities and we're also well aware that it might be confusing to people outside.
So, a brief explanation.
The Prostate Cancer Research Foundation (formerly the Prostate Cancer Charitable Trust) was established to complement (but not duplicate) the valuable activities of other prostate cancer charities.
In other words, when you're facing an enemy as dangerous as ours, you need allies, not competition (hence our working actively with other charities funding research at Royal Marsden Hospital into genetic causes of prostate cancer).
In other words, our double strategy is not only unique, but uniquely ours.
